Message from the Board President

As 2017 rolls to a close, the LOS board of directors continues our mission to serve the San Antonio community through philanthropy, outreach, and musical performance. We hope our playful theme through this performance will delight you while also fulfilling your need for sounds of the holiday season. We’re so happy that you are here to spend a little time with us! This is that time of year where many are planning their trips, requesting time off, and strategizing their shopping adventures.

The holiday season is also associations with family, togetherness, and a sense of welcome. Unfortunately many people in the LGBT community have experienced some family loss. Whether it was the loss of relationships, or being ostracized or not accepted by their loved ones. So often during the holiday season, people feel reminded of this. Bringing a special someone home to meet the family can be stressful for anyone, but can be particularly difficult for someone in the LGBTQ community. We are all looking for a place we can be ourselves and feel loved and accepted.

This is when many turn to a “Family of Choice”, where they find acceptance rather than rejection. I am ever so very thankful to our late founding Artistic Director,,Ron Casola: that I am able to continue to call the Live Oak Singers a huge part of my “Family of Choice”!

"We, as gay people, we get to choose our family and the people we're around" -- RuPaul Charles

It's comforting in a very real way, but can also be jarring. In the real world, not everyone is going to get you, not everyone is going to understand or even tolerate your sexuality or gender identity. After being around people so accepting and caring, going back to your previous life is quite a juxtaposition, because sometimes you forget that not everyone is as wonderful as your chosen family. During the holiday season and always, it is important that we support each other.

For those of you who have been a part of our holiday performances over the years, welcome back for another amazing show!  As you must know, we’ve been preparing to entertain you for months. For our guests that are here for the first time sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!  Again, thank you for your continued support and attendance this evening.  We hope to be able to continue to bring you a moment of happiness through our music for years to come. HAPPY HOLIDAYS from our family to yours.

In Faith, Hope, & Love
